Online Basketball Pick: Georgetown Hoyas vs Pittsburgh Panthers
Saturday, January 28, 2012
by Joe Rodriguez
Fresh off its first Big East victory, Pittsburgh Panthers has a chance to win back-to-back games for the first time in more than a month when it hosts No. 10 Georgetown Hoyas Saturday at Petersen Events Center.
The Panthers were on an eight-game losing streak before their 86-74 victory over Providence and were alone in last place in the conference standings.
Although Pittsburgh has virtually no chance at winning the regular-season title, it still has an opportunity to play its way back into the NCAA tournament discussion with a strong finish.
The Hoyas, meanwhile, have won three in a row after defeating Rutgers 52-50.

Justbet Sportsbook currently have the Panthers listed as 1-point favorites versus the Hoyas.
Georgetown Hoyas (16-3): Georgetown, led by Jason Clark and Hollis Thompson, has been a nice surprise in the Big East after preseason projections had the Hoyas finishing in the middle of the conference standings. Clark, a senior, is scoring 15 points per game for Georgetown, which is 5-1 in its six true road games this season. Thompson, meanwhile, averages 14 points. Two of the Hoyas' five road wins were against ranked opponents — then-No. 21 Alabama on Dec. 1 and then-No. 4 Louisville on Dec. 28.
Pittsburgh Panthers (12-9): Pittsburgh has been known for dominating opponents on its home court, but the Panthers have struggled this year. Pittsburgh has lost four of its last five home games and has been outscored by an average of 7.5 points. However, in the Panthers' win over the Friars, they had three players finish in double figures, including Ashton Gibbs, who scored a game-high 22 points. Gibbs was named the preseason Big East player of the year, but has been fairly inconsistent this season despite leading the team with 16 points per game. Pittsburgh has won 28 of its last 33 Big East home games.
1. Pittsburgh is 11-0 all-time against top-10 opponents in the Petersen Events Center.
2. Georgetown leads the all-time series 40-34, but the Panthers have won four of the last five meetings.
3. At home, Pittsburgh is 66-14 against Big East opponents and has won 63 of its last 70 games overall. This season, the Panthers are just 1-3 against conference opponents and 7-5 overall.
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Hoyas 66, Panthers 63.
