No 5 Duke to Cover on Feb. 20th: Best Free Basketball Picks

Betting on the #5 Duke Blue Devils to cover the spread versus the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, no matter what the spread, is an easy addition to my free basketball picks list for the weekend.

The Dookies aren’t the best covering team in the world, but Georgia Tech is close to being as bad as any team in the ACC. In fact, push come to shove, I’d probably back Wake Forest against the Yellow Jackets right now. Luckily, I don’t have to worry about making that decision when G-Tech travels to Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday.

Check out some trends for this game.

• The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 2 and 6 ATS in their last 8 games.

• The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 1 and 6 ATS in their away games this season.

• The Duke Blue Devils are 6 and 7 ATS in their home games this season.

• The Duke Blue Devils are 4 and 1 ATS in their last 5 games this season.

24 points can be very intimidating. So intimidating, in fact, that I’m rethinking putting Duke on my free basketball picks list for this weekend…nah, I’m just joking. Seriously? Is there any hoops handicapper out there who believes that the freakin’ Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are going to be able to sniff Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Sunday?

I don’t believe that there is. For Duke to beat Georgia Tech and cover my predicted online betting spread of 24 points, they would need to simply score 13 more baskets than the horrible Yellow Jackets. Is that possible? I believe that it is. The Dookies average an impressive 83.2 points per game off of close to 48% shooting. What it means is that Duke averages almost 50% from the field as a team. From behind the arc, Duke shoots close to 40%. That’s an incredible percentage from three-point land.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets shoot only 40% as a team from the field. From behind the three-point line, the Yellow Jackets average 29%. G-Tech lost by 25 points to Virginia Tech two games ago, 77 to 102, as 10 ½ point road dogs. If the Hokies could blister the Yellow Jackets by 25 points, what’s Duke going to do on Sunday?

In fact, the only way Duke doesn’t cover the spread is if the odds makers get really crazy with betting line. If the line on the game goes beyond, say, 30 points, then hoops handicappers might want to consider dropping Duke from their betting lists. I’ll probably rescind this article and take the Dookies off of my free basketball picks list for the weekend.

But if the line is under Duke -30, then I don’t see how I can go against the Blue Devils. Coach K’s team faces one of the worst ACC teams I’ve seen in a long, long time. I’ll try to ride the Dookies to a huge, huge victory on Sunday, Feb. 19th.
