by Joe Rodriguez
Two teams heading in opposite directions will meet when Iowa State travels to Texas.
The Iowa State Cyclones, who finished last in the Big 12 in 2010-11 and weren't expected to do much this season, have won two straight games and are surprisingly in the top four of the conference at 4-2.
The Texas Longhorns, usually one of the frontrunners in the Big 12, have dropped three in a row to fall to 2-4 in conference play.
Entering this season, Texas had won seven straight meetings in this series but Iowa State prevailed 77-71 in Ames in the Big 12 opener on Jan. 4.

Justbet Sportsbook currently have the Longhorns listed as 7-point favorites versus the Cyclones.
Iowa State Cyclones (14-5): Even in their worst years, the Cyclones have been a tough opponent at Hilton Coliseum, but this season the team has had some of its best performances away from Ames. Iowa State won at Texas A&M 74-50 earlier this season and, most recently, drilled Texas Tech 76-52 on the road, posting two 20-point league road wins for the first time since 1943-44. The Cyclones are using the long ball to run away from opponents, leading the Big 12 with 9.1 made 3-pointers per game.
Texas Longhorns (12-7): If the Longhorns are to make their 14th straight NCAA Tournament appearance, they need to start piling some victories together quickly. They narrowly missed a breakthrough win at home against Kansas on Saturday, but the Jayhawks made one too many plays down the stretch and escaped with a 69-66 victory. Texas' young roster - six of nine contributors are freshmen - is starting to come together, and seniors JCovan Brown and Clint Chapman are stepping into more of a leadership role, but the Longhorns can't afford to drop many more winnable games.
1. Iowa State sophomore Royce White is second in the conference with 9.3 rebounds per game.
2. Brown has made 28 consecutive free throws and 38 of his last 39 attempts.
3. The Cyclones finished 3-13 in Big 12 play last season, meaning they’ve already improved upon their win total in 2011-12.
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Longhorns 75, Cyclones 67.
