The first SEC game of the season kicks off on Thursday night as Auburn Tigers and Mississippi State Bulldogs, two teams who comfortably won their openers against overmatched non-conference foes, face off. The Tigers opened as 2.5-point road favorites on Bodog’s NCAA odds and there will be live betting available with the game being shown on ESPN.
If Michigan’s Denard Robinson was the most impressive first-year starting quarterback in the nation last week, then Auburn’s Cameron Newton was a close second. Newton, a former top recruit at Florida who transferred to Auburn from junior college, passed for 186 yards and three TDs and rushed for another 171 and two more scores in 52-26 win over Arkansas State. Auburn rolled up 608 yards of offense.
Another player was very impressive in his Auburn debut: heralded freshman running back Michael Dyer, who carried 14 times for 95 yards and a touchdown. Starter Mario Fannin had just three carries in the game but will remain the No. 1 option in the backfield for now ahead of Dyer. Mario Fannin did fumble in the third quarter of last week’s game that led to a brief benching. He did have four catches for 65 yards and two touchdowns.
Mississippi State pummeled Memphis 49-7 last week. Backup quarterback Tyler Russell tied a school record with four touchdown passes, going 13-for-16 for 256 yards, in his debut as the Bulldogs had 569 total yards, just 27 shy of the school record. Even with Russell’s big game, MSU is going to stick with a two-quarterback system. Starter Chris Relf also played well, completing 7 of 9 passes for 116 yards, including a 55-yard TD. He also ran seven times for 20 yards.
Auburn has won two straight in this series, including 49-24 at home in 2009. The Tigers are 11-4-1 all-time in Starkville.
