NCAA Baskteball Picks and Tips:  Purdue at No 15 Alabama

Purdue’s productive offense will get a stiff test when it faces No. 15 Alabama Crimson Tide in the championship game of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan Sunday. The Purdue Boilermakers are averaging almost 85 points a game and shooting 45 percent from 3-point range, while the Crimson Tide defense has allowed 50.8 points and 31 percent shooting against through four games – 22.5 percent from behind the 3-point arc.

Alabama also blocked a tournament-record 14 shots in the semifinal victory over Wichita State. Purdue’s Robbie Hummel and Alabama’s Tony Mitchell have led the way in the first two games of the tournament. Hummel has 44 points, 15 rebounds and is 16-of-36 from the field. Mitchell has 43 points, 19 rebounds, five blocks and is 16-for-27 from the field.

Purdue Boilermakers (4-0): Hummel, coming off two season-ending knee injuries, and Ryne Smith have keyed an offense that has launched 101 shots from behind the 3-point arc. Hummel is averaging 20.8 points and Smith 15.8, including 59 percent on 3-pointers. Senior point guard Lewis Jackson had a career-best day in the semifinal victory over Temple. Jackson, who had never scored 20 or more in his career, registered 26 against the Owls. Freshman Anthony Johnson is also averaging almost 10 points.

Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0): The Crimson Tide return three starters from a 25-12 team that reached the NIT title game and were picked fourth in the preseason SEC poll. Alabama has won 24 of its last 30 games. Mitchell leads the way, averaging 18 points and 9.5 rebounds. JaMychal Green and Trevor Releford also average in double figures scoring. The Tide will need to shoot better than 44.5 percent from the field as the season goes on. Freshmen Rodney Cooper and Levi Randolph have chipped in, starting all four games.

1. Purdue has beaten Alabama in each of the past two seasons and leads the series, 5-2.

2. Alabama is 4-0 for the first time since the 2006-07 season, when the Tide won its first seven.
