NCAA Baskteball Picks and Tips: Pepperdine Waves at UCLA Bruins
Monday, November 28, 2011
Frank Martin
UCLA Bruins, the preseason Pac-12 Conference favorite, is still searching for its first Division I win as it hosts Pepperdine Waves at the Los Angeles Sports Arena Monday. The Bruins have had about as many problems off the court as it has had on it.
Star forward Reeves Nelson is back with the team after a one-game suspension but his return didn’t help much against the powerhouses that filled the Maui Invitational field last week. Pepperdine snapped a two-game skid with a win over Texas-San Antonio on Saturday and already has a win over one Pac-12 team on the season.

The Bruins have opened as 12-point favorites on SBG Global Sportsbook’s Live NCAA Basketball Odds.
Pepperdine Waves (3-2): The Waves began the season 2-0 including an upset win at Arizona State. Pepperdine was concerned about its offense after losing its top two scorers before the season and seeing its third-leading scorer, Lorne Jackson, downed by a knee injury in the preseason. But they’ve shown great balance and against the Sun Devils all 10 men who played scored. It was Pepperdine’s first win against a Pac-12 team in 11 tries.
UCLA Bruins (1-4): UCLA’s lone win is against NAIA member Chaminade in last week’s Maui Invitational. Nelson, who was suspended for attitude problems by coach Ben Howland, returned to the Bruins lineup in that game but was benched for the first half for missing the team plane to Hawaii. Nelson seemed to give UCLA a lift against the Silverswords but Chaminade was clearly outmanned anyway. He did little in UCLA’s subsequent losses to Kansas and Michigan. UCLA nearly battled all the way back from a 20-point deficit against No. 14 Kansas late in the game but ran out of gas and fell 72-56. They then were flat in the next game losing to the Wolverines 79-63. All four of UCLA’s losses have come by double-digits.
1.
UCLA is playing most of its home slate
at the L.A. Sports Arena this season and is already 0-2 at the venue.
2. Pepperdine won its first two games of the season for the first time
since 2000.
3. The
Waves last beat UCLA during the 2001-02 season.
