The Golden Bears have opened as 14-point favorites on SBG Global Sportsbook’s Live NCAA Basketball Odds.
Denver Pioneers (4-0): Rob Lewis scored 17 points and Chris Udofia added 13 in the Pioneers’ win over Saint Mary’s. Picked to finish fourth in the Sun Belt Conference West Division preseason coaches' poll, Denver made 10 3-pointers against the Gaels. Lewis, who missed last season with an injury, averaged 16 points and four rebounds in just 22 minutes against Southern Mississippi and Saint Mary’s. Udofia is averaging 15.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.3 blocks. Guard Brian Stafford scored a career-high 32 points in the Pioneers’ opener against Portland State. The senior is 14th on Denver’s all-time scoring list with 1,206 career points.
California Golden Bears (4-1): The Golden Bears figure to drop out of the national rankings after suffering their worst non-conference loss ever. California looked overmatched against Missouri, but the Golden Bears were much sharper in a 70-46 rout of Georgia in the CBE Classic semifinal game. Last season’s conference Freshman of the Year, Allen Crabbe, is averaging 13 points. He struggled against Missouri, however, shooting 1 of 8 from the field. Richard Solomon has been a pleasant surprise, averaging 6.8 rebounds. Freshman forward David Kravish is one of Montgomery’s first players off the bench.
1. California is the first ranked opponent that Denver has faced since falling to No. 10 Gonzaga in 2003.
2. Denver will leave the Sun Belt Conference for the Western Athletic Conference in 2012-13.
3. California is 2-0 all-time against Denver, but they haven’t met since the 1967-68 season.
