Tuesday, December 20, 2011

Coming off another late-game meltdown last Saturday, Purdue Boilermakers looks to finish the non-conference portion of its schedule on a winning. The Boilermakers host intrastate foe IPFW Mastodons on Tuesday in West Lafayette, Ind. Purdue, which squandered a 19-point lead earlier this month against No. 9 Xavier, blew a 15-point lead against Butler last weekend and lost on a last second shot, 67-65. The Boilermakers, who own the fourth longest homecourt win streak in the nation at 24 games, battle an IPFW team that comes in riding a season-best five-game winning streak.

IPFW Mastodons (7-3): In four of their five wins during the streak, the Mastodons have been involved in a one-possession game in the final two minutes and won them all. Junior guard Frank Gaines ranks 11th in the nation in scoring (21.4), which is third in the Summit League. Gaines, who also averages 5.4 rebounds, has topped the 20-point mark in eight of 10 games. Senior center Trey McCorkle is second in scoring (15.0) and leads the team in rebounding (7.5) and field goal percentage (60.0). Freshman point guard Jonny Marlin has started all 10 games, handing out 54 assists with only 22 turnovers. Fellow freshman guard Isaiah McCray scored a career-best 11 points of the bench in Sunday's win at UT Martin.
Purdue Boilermakers (9-3): The Boilermakers continue to be led by the senior trio of Robbie Hummel, Ryne Smith, and Lewis Jackson. The three combined for 36 points in the first half against Butler, only to be held to seven in the second half as Purdue blew a double-digit lead. Hummel leads the team in points (18.1) and rebounds (5.6) and has led the team in scoring in six straight games and seven of the last eight. Smith, who leads the Big Ten in 3-point field goals per game (3.1), averages 11.1 points while Jackson leads the team in assists (4.2) while averaging 10.8 points. Jackson has been bothered by back spasms in recent weeks. Purdue is third in the nation averaging just 9.4 turnovers per game, but continues to struggle from the free throw line, shooting 61.5 percent.
1. Purdue's Hummel needs 15 points to move into 20th place on the all-time scoring list at Purdue. He is currently No. 2 in rebounding and No. 3 in scoring all-time among current Big Ten players.
2. IPFW has never beaten a Big Ten school, losing all 18 games. The Mastodons, who lost at Iowa by 10 last month, have played Michigan State (0-6) and Purdue (0-4) more than any other Big Ten opponent.
3. Since head coach Matt Painter returned to his alma mater, Purdue is 39-12 in December games and the Boilermakers have won 17 of their last 19, with the only two losses coming this year to No. 9 Xavier and Butler. Stats and Records
