Motivation might go quite a long ways in determining who is going to be beating the NCAA Basketball lines on Tuesday night. The Illini are just barely hanging on to their spot in the NCAA Tournament right now, and it would really behoove them to win one of these last two games in the regular season and at least one in the Big Ten Tournament to feel relatively safe about getting into the dance.
There really hasn't been a win against a good team in quite some time. Illinois' best win since a January 6th triumph over the Wisconsin Badgers was a 71-62 win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers; in other words, there might not be a win against a team that is sure to be in March Madness since.
After tinkering quite a bit with his lineup, Head Coach Bruce Weber has determined that using Demetri McCarney, Mike Tisdale, and Mike Davis in his starting five is the right call. It certainly worked in NCAA Basketball betting action last week against the Iowa Hawkeyes, as these three came up with a total of 63 points, almost enough to beat Iowa by themselves.
Of course, we know that Purdue isn't without motivation either. Thanks to all of the carnage at the top of the NCAA College Basketball Poll, this team has a legitimate chance at being a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament if it can win the Big Ten, and it will almost certainly end up being a top seed in the dance by winning out in the regular season and then capturing three wins in the Big Ten Tournament to finish at 29-5.
Purdue basketball revolves around JaJuan Johnson and E'Twaun Moore, and both have been playing lights out ball all season long. They can combine for 40+ on any given night, and they just might do so again in this one.
Still, survival is key right now, and that's what is going to be the underlying theme for the Illini for the rest of the year. No, they won't figure out how to win, but they'll do well where it really counts to us.
