NCAA Basketball Free Picks: Indiana Hoosiers vs Nebraska Cornhuskers
Wednesday, January 18, 2012
by Joe Rodriguez
With No. 13 Indiana Hoosiers experiencing its first adversity of the season, perhaps there is no better time to face one of the teams in the basement of the Big Ten. The Hoosiers breezed through the early part of their schedule with wins in 15 of their first 16 contests, but have found life to be a bit more difficult recently.
They suffered their first home setback of the season to Minnesota and a blowout loss at Ohio State after three nail-biting conference wins.
Their opponent on Wednesday can relate to not getting over the hump in conference as Nebraska Cornhuskers has suffered a pair of five-point road losses at Illinois and Wisconsin sandwiched around its only conference win against Penn State.
The Cornhuskers shot 35.2 percent from the field against the Badgers – the fourth time in six conference games they have shot 36 percent or less. Indiana leads the all-time series 8-1, although the schools have not met since 1982.

SBG Global Sportsbook currently have the Hoosiers listed as 4½-point favorites versus the Cornhuskers.
Indiana Hoosiers (15-3): Even though the Hoosiers are still the best-shooting (49.7 percent) and highest-scoring team (80.8 points per game) in the conference, they have fallen off a bit in each category during their two-game slide, primarily due to their struggles from the 3-point line. After hitting 47.6 percent behind the arc in its first 16 games, Indiana has shot a combined 11-of-39 (28.2 percent) from the 3-point line against the Gophers and Buckeyes.
Nebraska Cornhuskers (9-8): The Huskers' lack of aggressiveness on the offensive end cost them against Wisconsin. They attempted just two free throws, the lowest mark for a Doc Sadler team in his six seasons and third time in conference play the team attempted less than 10 free throws in a game. It's a troubling trend for a team that is shooting just 38.4 percent from the field in Big Ten play but leads the conference in free throw percentage (75.5 percent).
1. The Hoosiers’ next Big Ten win will surpass last season’s conference win total and match the four such victories they had during the 2009-10 season.
2. Nebraska is 2-6 this season when it attempts fewer than 18 free throws.
3. Indiana’s Jordan Hulls is second in the Big Ten and sixth in the nation in 3-point shooting this season (52.6 percent).
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Hoosiers 69, Cornhuskers 62.
