For the first time since April we have some college basketball that matters as the 2010-11 season tips off on Monday night with the top matchup coming when Rhode Island Rams visits No. 4 Pittsburgh Panthers, the Big East preseason favorite. Bet on the game with Bodog’s NCAA basketball odds.
Pitt brings back 86 percent of its scoring, four starters and seven of its top eight players from last season and the Panthers were voted as the team to beat by Big East coaches. Pitt could have one of the best backcourts in the nation as Ashton Gibbs and Brad Wanamaker, who both started all 34 games last season, are back. Wanamaker became the first player in school history to average 10 points, 4 rebounds and 4 assists in the same season. Gibbs is the leading scorer returning, as he averaged 15.7 ppg last year. Senior C Gary McGhee led the team in field-goal percentage (62.3), rebounding (6.8 rpg) and blocked shots (59) last season. However, Nasir Robinson, who started all 34 games last season, is out with a knee injury.
Pitt has won 47 consecutive games against non-conference opponents at the Petersen Events Center. And the Panthers haven’t lost a season opener since 1996. Pitt has also won 96 of its last 97 home games against regular season non-conference opponents and is 75-1 vs. non-conference competition at the Petersen Events Center since it opened.
Rhode Island returns three starters from a team that went 26-10 last season and lost to North Carolina in overtime in the NIT semifinals. Delroy James (13.2 ppg) is the leading returning scorer.
These two meet for the seventh time in series history. Pitt is 5-1 all-time vs. Rhode Island and has won five straight vs. the Rams. But they haven’t played since 2002.
