The Phoenix Suns vs. Los Angeles Lakers means something – something big – after all. Through two games of the NBA Western Conference Finals, the Lakers (-7.5 for Thursday) seemed prepared to steamroll Phoenix Suns. Instead, the Suns buckled down with their zone defense and won two straight at home to draw even as the series shifts back to Staples Center in L.A.
The Suns’ bench was the story in their 115-106 Game 4 win, going 20 for 32 from the field and hitting nine three-pointers. Steve Nash was mildly hindered by his broken nose and was just 3 for 11 with 15 points; Amare Stoudemire’s 21 points were solid but unspectacular. But bench players Channing Frye, Leandro Barbosa, and Jared Dudley had 14, 14, and 11 points, respectively.
Kobe Bryant maintained his hot play in Game 4, notching 38 points and 10 assists, but he wants more help in Game 5. In addition to publicly demanding a better defensive effort from his teammates, he’ll need Pau Gasol to rally from his 15-point effort.
