Only two people among 5.9 million who filled out March Madness brackets on ESPN.com predicted to see the Virginia Commonwealth Rams, the Butler Bulldogs, the Connecticut Huskies and the Kentucky Wildcats in the March Madness Final Four.
Of the four teams, the Kentucky Wildcats have the most players averaging double digit scores for the season: Brandon Knight, 17.3; Terrence Jones, 15.8; Doron Lamb, 12.3; and Darius Miller, 11.1. Plus, senior Jose Harrellson has upped his average since the tournament began to 14.8 points per game in the team’s past four games. Kentucky’s record is 17-14-1 ATS and in their last match against North Carolina covered a 1.5 spread as favorites.
Butler has only two players that consistently put in for double digits: Matt Howard with 16.7 and Shelvin Mack with 15.9. Mack had 27 points in Butler’s 74-71 win against Florida on Saturday and Howard had 14 points. Butler is 19-14-1 ATS.
UConn has Kemba Walker, its heavy hitter and top scorer among all teams in the tournament with 23.9 points per game, plus rising star freshman Jeremy Lamb with an average of 11.1 points per game. Connecticut is 21-12 ATS.
Virginia averages 71.8 points per game and has four players averaging in double digits: Jamie Skeen with 15.4 (he put in for 26 points against Kansas in Virginia’s most recent matchup); Bradford Burgers, 14.3; Brandon Rozzell, 11.8; and Joey Rodriguez, 10.5. Virginia is 5-1 SU in its past six games and 18-20 ATS. Virginia is only the third No. 11 seed to reach the March Madness Final Four in tournament history.
