MLB Betting: MLB betting action continues in Beantown with two teams that are hanging on to their playoff hopes when the Tigers face the Red Sox over the course of this weekend.

The Tigers are coming off of a bad sweep in Tampa Bay to drop right around the .500 mark. Coming into Friday night, they need to make a major move in a hurry. They are six-games back in the AL Central race and are long since out of the AL Wild Card push.

The Red Sox are chasing those aforementioned Rays for the final playoff spot in the American League. They are 7.5-games off the pace in the AL East and 5.5-games behind Tampa Bay.

Manager Jim Leyland is going to send RHP Max Scherzer to the bump for the 20th time this year. Scherzer is 7-8 on the season with a 4.45 ERA, and though those numbers probably aren't what Detroit was hoping for on the season after trading for him in the offseason, there is no doubt that he is starting to get his act together.

Scherzer is a solid 5-2 in his L/8 starts, and he has only allowed either one run or no runs in six of those eight outings. Striking out batters left and right is becoming a mainstay for the righty. He has K'd at least five batters in nine straight starts, averaging 7.22 per start during that stretch.

The righty had a woeful start against the Red Sox earlier this season, allowing six runs on three dingers in just five innings of work. It was Scherzer's only career start against the boys from Beantown.

The Red Sox are hoping for a fourth straight solid start out of RHP Daisuke Matsuzaka on Saturday. The Japanese right hander has only allowed four runs in his L/3 starts, allowing just 12 total hits in 18.2 innings of work.

Walks are a bit of an issue for Dice-K, as he has allowed 42 walks in just 14 starts on the season. However, a 7-3 record and a 4.09 ERA are nothing to be ashamed of.

Against the Tigers in his career, Matsuzaka has been rock solid, going 4-1 with a 2.64 ERA in five starts.

The Tigers are starting this weekend in bad shape in their history at Fenway Park. They are just 6-21 in their L/26 meetings in Boston and are just 18-39 in their L/57 clashes overall against the Red Sox.

Matsuzaka is 11-4 in his L/15 Saturday starts and the 'under' has gone 12-5-1 in his L/18 home outings.

Detroit is just 3-13 in its L/16 games overall, which has put it in this type of a tenuous position in the playoff push. Boston might be 8-2 in its L/10 games played on Saturday, but it still needs to make a huge move to get back in the American League playoff race.
