Over the course of a 162-game season, every team has its share of hot and cold streaks. But with less than 30 games to go in the regular season, these streaks become much more magnified. Here’s a look at two of the most interesting matchups in MLB betting this week featuring two teams that entered the week on big streaks.
- Los Angeles Dodgers at San Diego Padres
Both the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres are in dire need of wins in their three-game series starting this Monday night. The Dodgers are trying to keep their playoff hopes alive, while the Padres are trying to hang on to their dwindling lead in the NL West.

In mid-August, the San Diego Padres had the best record in the National League and appeared to be in cruise control towards a playoff spot. But heading into Sunday’s action, San Diego was mired in a nine-game losing streak, and held only a two-game lead in the NL West over the San Francisco Giants.
The losing streak cost Padres backers a devastating 11.55 units in losses on the moneyline. The offense has been the main culprit of the skid as San Diego scored two or less runs in six of the nine games. Not surprisingly, the UNDER was 6-3 over the course of the slump. The Padres will have to find a way to get the offense rolling again soon.
The Los Angeles Dodgers entered Sunday’s action on a 2-5 skid (3.00 units lost on the moneyline), which offset the progress they made in going 5-2 in the seven games prior (in which they won 3.25 units). It’s been that kind of a season for the Dodgers; they can’t quite seem to put it together consistently.
This could be a big opportunity for Los Angeles to try and make a late playoff push. While they haven’t played well on the road this season (28-37 overall, down 10.13 units), they have played well at PETCO Park. In six games on the road against San Diego this season, the Dodgers are 4-2 and have earned their backers 2.22 units on the moneyline. It’s also worth noting that five of the six games these two teams have played in San Diego have gone UNDER the total.
- Baltimore Orioles at New York Yankees
Unlike San Diego, the New York Yankees have been trending in the right direction of late, and they currently hold the best record in baseball. They will look to add to their lead in the AL East when they host the Baltimore Orioles in a three-game series starting this Monday afternoon.
The New York Yankees entered Sunday’s action as the hottest team in baseball with an eight-game winning streak. The streak had brought their overall record to 86-50, good for a season profit of 6.20 units. Six of the eight wins came at home, improving New York’s AL-best home record to 48-22 (+7.20 units on the moneyline).
Entangled in a tough race for the division lead in the AL East with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Yankees had good reason to be concerned when superstar third baseman Alex Rodriguez hit the DL with a calf strain on August 21. But they did just fine without him, going 11-3 over the last two weeks. Rodriguez should be back in action for this series.
The Baltimore Orioles have the worst record in the American League, entering Sunday’s action with a 50-86 record and down 15.42 units on the moneyline. Being in the same division as the New York Yankees certainly doesn’t help, as the Orioles are just 2-10 (and down 6.35 units) against the Yankees in their 12 meetings this year.
Heading into Sunday’s action, Baltimore was 4-3 in their last seven games, sweeping the Los Angeles Angels last week and picking up a win against Tampa Bay on Saturday. The Orioles will have to build on their momentum in a big way to steal a game from the Yankees; both of their wins against them this year came in Baltimore. Baltimore has lost all six of the two teams’ meetings at Yankee Stadium, all by margins of two runs or more.
