Jan 21st NCAA Picks: Purdue Boilermakers vs Michigan State Spartans
Saturday, January 21, 2012
by Joe Rodriguez
A week ago, No. 9 Michigan State Spartans was riding high after putting together a 15-game win streak, its longest in more than a decade. Since then, the Spartans have lost two straight, both on the road, to Northwestern and rival Michigan.
On Saturday, the Spartans return home to the Breslin Center to take on a Purdue team that has had their number in recent years.
The Purdue Boilermakers have won two straight in East Lansing, including last year's 67-47 victory. They are 7-12 all-time at the Breslin Center, though.

Justbet Sportsbook currently have the Spartans listed as 8-point favorites versus the Boilermakers.
Purdue Boilermakers (14-5): Purdue hasn't won three straight games in East Lansing since winning five in a row from 1993-98. This year, four of the Boilermakers' five losses have come on the road or at neutral sites. That includes a disappointing 65-45 loss at Penn State on Jan. 5. In last year's victory at Breslin, Purdue dealt Michigan State its worst home loss since 2003. The Boilers did it with strong defense, holding the Spartans to just 33 percent shooting — including a 1-of-11 effort from 3-point range. Purdue has held five straight opponents to 68 points or less.
Michigan State Spartans (15-4): For the second straight year, Michigan State went into Crisler Center and owned the glass (31-15) against Michigan, only to come away without a win. Michigan State has the physicality part down, but needs to do a more effective job defensively. Each of Michigan State's last two opponents have shot 50 percent or better from the field, and Purdue has shot a combined 50.4 percent in its two most recent victories against the Spartans. Michigan State will play four of its next five games at home.
1. Michigan State is 12-0 at home this year.
2. Purdue has won two of its last three road games against opponents ranked in the top 10.
3. Draymond Green and Robbie Hummel are the Big Ten’s top two active rebounders at 894 and 730, respectively.
BASKETBALL PREDICTION: Spartans 72, Boilermakers 66.
