All NBA betting fans wondered if the new Denver Nuggets were for real. They looked fantastic after shipping Carmelo Anthony to New York, but the dream may be over the Oklahoma City Thunder have grabbed a 2-0 lead in their first-round playoff series. The teams meet for Game 3 on Saturday.
Denver went 18-7 after trading Anthony. Though no player in particular started lighting it up, everyone raised his game a notch or two and the club kept racking up points. After Wednesday’s 106-89 loss to the Thunder, though, it looks like Denver may finally be missing the scoring punch Anthony brought to the team.
The Denver Nuggets shot just 39.1 percent in Game 2. Four players scored in double figures, but there was nobody to consistently put up a bucket when Denver needed it most. That’s going to be very problematic moving forward, as the Nuggets aren’t exactly the best defenders in the world they like to outscore their opponents.
And it will be very hard to outscore Oklahoma City. The Thunder have topped 100 points in both games against the Nuggets, and stopping Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook when already down two games seems next to impossible. Oklahoma City’s stars have delivered so far; Durant is averaging 32.0 points and 7.0 rebounds through two games while Westbrook is putting up 26.0 points, 7.0 assists, and 5.0 rebounds.
In fact, we could be witnessing a changing of the guard in the Western Conference. The Lakers and Spurs both stumbled in their first playoff games, so the young, talented Thunder might be ready to take over as the conference’s superpower. Obviously they still have to prove themselves against the old guard Denver certainly doesn’t count in that regard but this Oklahoma City squad has playoff experience from last season and could be on the verge of something special.
